A luxury boutique hotel that embraces a philosophy of “sustainability without compromise”
In an area that has become overrun by a sea of large chain hotels, the family-owned Talbott Hotel on Chicago’s Gold Coast stands out as a breath of fresh air. The 149-room luxury boutique hotel sits just one block from famed Michigan Avenue in the heart of Chicago’s best offerings, from world-class shopping and entertainment to the award-winning restaurants of Rush Street.
An intimate, highly personalized luxury boutique hotel was always exactly what owner Basil Kromelow envisioned when he bought the property in 1965 with his father Jack, in whose honor the City would later rename the street in front of the hotel. When Basil was a young man he spent the summer traveling through Europe and immediately became awe-struck by the boutique hotels he had experienced. Calling upon his European inspiration, Basil transformed the one-time extended stay hotel, originally built in 1927, into a haven for luxury guests and business travelers alike. The Talbott offers the charm of a bygone era with all of the modern conveniences discerning travelers have come to demand and expect.
The Talbott, both a AAA Four-Diamond property and a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, has always insisted on being at the forefront of hospitality trends, in terms of service, amenities and technology. It is with this mindset that they embarked on a journey to make their hotel “Greenficient” to not only protect the environment but to enhance the guest experience. Accordingly, they adopted the credo of “sustainability without compromise” and undertook an extensive, and expensive, process to meet Chicago’s Green Hotels Initiative. In order to do so, the hotel worked diligently for months to meet the environmental lodging standard, which brings with it requirements in waste management, energy efficiency, water conservation, waste water management and green procurement. As a result of their dedication, The Talbott Hotel was one of the first hotels in Chicago, and the only independently-owned and operated hotel, to receive Green Seal Certification by the City of Chicago.
According to the Chicago Climate Action Plan, over 70% of all carbon emissions in the city come from buildings and with 24-hour operations, hotels account for a large portion of these emissions. Going well beyond the Green Standards initially set out by the city, The Talbott purchases wind energy credits to offset its entire carbon footprint making the hotel 100% carbon neutral. Earlier this year, the Environmental Protection Agency recognized the hotel for those efforts by granting it membership into their esteemed Green Power Leadership Club.
Although The Talbott has made, and continues to make, great strides in the “Greening” of the hotel, the guests also play a large and important role in effectively ensuring the hotel’s sustainability. As part of the hotel’s recently completed multi-million dollar refurbishment of all the guest rooms and suites, new air conditioning and heating systems were installed utilizing the latest and greatest technology available. On the A/C control unit, there is a small green button which when pressed activates the “eco-mode.” Not only does this alert the housekeeping staff you are willing to have your sheets and towels changed every other day, instead of daily, but it communicates with the door locks in the room so the room temperature automatically adjusts within five to eight degrees in either direction after you have either exited or entered the room so as to not waste electricity.
With its central location, abundance of double rooms and oversized one-bedroom suites, The Talbott is great for families, couples on vacation or the business traveler. Keeping up with the times, The Talbott offers complimentary Wi-Fi in all the guestrooms and provides complimentary access to the nearby 55,000 square foot, state-of-the-art Equinox Fitness Center.
Once back in the hotel, guests have several options to satisfy their hunger, no matter the time of day. A fine dining experience awaits right downstairs in the lobby at Bice Bistro, an upscale restaurant offering authentic Italian cuisine. Bice’s eclectic and innovative
menu highlights regional specialties from Tuscany and Lombardy. In the warmer months, you can enjoy the fresh Chicago air as outdoor seating lines the sidewalk in front of the hotel. If a more private dining experience is desired, or you just want a late night snack, 24-hour room service is also available.
The Talbott Hotel lives up to Basil Kromelow’s desire to operate the best luxury boutique hotel in Chicago. It is quaint, comfortable and makes you feel at home while visiting Chicago. Rates for The Talbott start at $179 per night during the low season and $249 during peak season.
