Indulge in a Luxury Scottish Highlands Wilderness Retreat
Alladale Wilderness Lodge & Reserve is a vast Wilderness Reserve of unparalleled natural beauty located in the Highlands of Scotland. Set amid 23,000 acres of majestic scenery, Alladale Lodge provides the perfect destination for a private escape. Staffed by an experienced team, the lodge provides an enviable base from which to enjoy all that the reserve and the wider region have to offer. Alladale is situated at the narrowest part of the British Isles (from the high ground it is possible to see both the Atlantic Ocean and North Sea) and from its elevated position, the lodge commands sweeping views of the surrounding glens and mountains.
Building on the vision of leading conservationists Doug and Kris Tomkins, who founded and manage Pumalin Park in Southern Chile, Owner Paul Lister works passionately to ensure the property has minimal impact on the surrounding environment and to restore the land to its former natural glory.
Providing a luxurious yet rustic atmosphere, the facility combines traditional character with fully modernized interiors that keep it cozy and inviting year round. Guests can lounge in front of the roaring fire enjoying spectacular views or unwind in the drawing room after the day’s pursuits choosing from a selection of fine wines and malt whiskies.
Delicious home-cooked meals are prepared by the lodge chef, using fresh, seasonal and organic ingredients both from the reserve and from local suppliers. A choice of menus can be created according to guests’ preferences ranging from healthy options to sheer indulgence. The elegant dining room accommodates guests catering for all Lodge occasions that include informal breakfasts, fine dining and evening banquets. Picnics, barbeques and light meals are prepared upon request and can be served in various locations on the reserve and afternoon tea is regularly served in the drawing room.
At the end of the day guests can retire to their ‘home away from home’ to the large elegant rooms which have original fireplaces, tall sash windows and many antiques throughout. The bedding and linen includes goose down pillows, finest English Lamb wool blankets, pure Egyptian mercerised cotton sheets and luxurious robes.
Guests also have the option of staying in the one of two new highland cottages. Situated in the heart of the Reserve, the two cottages will offer classic and stylish accommodation set amidst the rugged wilderness of the Scottish Highlands, ideal for smaller groups of friends and family. In keeping with Alladale’s eco friendliness the electricity within the cottages is run off the newly installed hydro turbine and most of the building materials and interior furnishings utilize materials sourced on the Reserve or close by
This visionary eco-tourism development focuses on restoring the balance of nature and provides a new approach to wildlife experiences. The staff and management place as much emphasis on providing a seamless experience for its guests as it does on creating the perfect conditions to re-wild the natural landscape and re-introduce native Scottish species. Guests can explore the reserve’s five glens, three rivers and 10 lochs home to golden eagles, red deer, pine martens, badgers, salmon, trout and other wildlife; also on offer are a multitude of outdoor leisure and sporting pursuits. The highly experienced local rangers will ensure guests can learn about Alladale’s extensive replanting of the native Caledonian pine forest, returning of lost species such as European elk (moose) and wild boar to help stimulate plant and tree regeneration and the reduction of the red deer population to improve habitat.
There are many activities both on and off the property for guests to enjoy during their stay. Those interested can do some fly fishing, clay & rifle shooting, go on a 4x4 safari, mountain biking or chose to relax and unwind in the sauna. Bird watchers will enjoy excellent birdlife including the Golden Eagle and Merlin. Various paths and 5 glens around the reserve can be explored on foot or by mountain bike. Guided walks are available to suit all fitness levels. Cycling to the nearby church and falls is on sealed and unmade roads. Nordic walking poles are also available or, if you prefer someone else do the work, sturdy Highland ponies can be used to explore the scenic grandeur of Alladale with tracks to suit all standards.
Excursions to the surrounding areas include golf at the Royal Dornoch Golf Club, tastings at Balblair and Glenmorangie whiskey distilleries, boat trips to the Moray Firth to see dolphins and seals, and visits to local pottery and craft shops.
No matter your vacation needs or desires Alladale is the perfect place for those wishing to relax in a peaceful setting and get away from it all.
