HUF HAUS does for residential housing what Bentley, Ferrari and Lamborghini do for automobiles: It builds with luxurious precision.
The century-old HUF HAUS company redefines comfort and craftsmanship. Its unique homes are designed, engineered and manufactured to meet the most demanding needs of affluent consumers. Each home marries award-winning architecture with German manufacturing precision to deliver a living environment that is as unique as its owner.
While most home builders construct homes in place – rain or shine – HUF HAUS builds all the components of every home in a weather-controlled factory then quickly assembles the sections on site. Generally, HUF HAUS craftsmen can assemble the components within a week, and finish the interior in another three months – still in a weather-proof environment.
Would You Build a Bentley in Your Backyard?
“Would you buy a Bentley assembled outdoors, with all the components and upholstery exposed to the elements? Of course not,” said Alexander Kolbe of HUF HAUS. “Exposing construction materials to rain, snow and humidity means the materials begin to deteriorate even before a building is completed. Carpenters spend their time compensating for conditions – and often repairing damaged materials – and not on precision construction.
“We eliminate those problems by building every home component – floors, walls, roofs – in a factory where we control the environment and can use the most sensitive and precise equipment, tools that you will never find at any typical construction site,” Kolbe said.
The result is a home that sets industry standards for energy efficiency because windows and insulation fit precisely. The extra-thick insulation and thick layers of cement used in flooring also means that HUF HAUS homes are the quietest in the world. The tight, heavily insulated construction delivers both comfort and silence.
“My wife and I wanted a home for our active family, but where every room could be a sanctuary,” said Henry L. “We looked at several estates and considered many custom builders. But no one offered the precision and the customization of HUF HAUS. It is truly incomparable.”
Improving on the Best Construction
Throughout history, the world’s most durable homes have been built using post and beam construction, a technique that creates large open spaces and solid, enduring structures. HUF HAUS modernizes the technique by using glue-laminated beams and posts that not only strengthen the structure but also make it more beautiful by joining layers of wood to reinforce their strength.
Then the company incorporates expanses of triple-insulated glass windows that make the outdoor landscape as much a part of the home’s interior as its exterior – while protecting occupants and maximizing energy efficiency.
The company’s triple-layered windows are 2 inches thick. Glass doors and all glass panels are also 2 inches thick. This means the glass windows and doors allow a home’s residents to comfortably enjoy the theater of nature, while protecting them from heat, cold and noise.
And, while the company’s home designs have come to incorporate more window space, HUF HAUS engineers and designers have actually reduced their energy demands by 50 percent since the 1980s. And, new energy efficient options like roof-mounted solar panels and heatpumps, can reduce a home’s energy footprint even more. One HUF HAUS home – a 7,100-square-foot residence in Hartenfels, Germany, produces enough electricity from its rooftop solar system that it can power a neighboring 5,000-square-foot chalet.
A Family Commitment to Craftsmanship
The company’s commitment to beauty and craftsmanship began in 1912, when Johann Huf founded the carpentry business that has since become HUF HAUS in Hartenfels, Germany, where the company maintains HUF village, a showplace of the company’s homes.
The company began manufacturing homes under controlled conditions in the 1960s. Since 1996, the founder’s grandsons Georg and Thomas Huf have served as co-presidents of the company, and continued the family tradition of collaboration and workmanship to manufacture just 150 premium homes a year.
HUF HAUS operates offices in Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, France, Austria, Denmark, Norway, Italy, Romania, Ireland and China. It just established a sales presence in the United States.
The company prides itself on its ability to deliver more than one-of-a-kind homes. It operates eight subsidiaries that produce custom furniture, landscaping, mechanical, electrical, heating, ventilation and air conditioning technology, and other systems. HUF HAUS created these businesses to respond to customer needs.
“Homes are always associated with emotions,” said co-president Georg Huf. “Our customers’ passion for our architecture is as important to them as knowing they have a real partner in HUF HAUS. Many come to Hartenfels for three days to partner with a team of HUF designers and engineers who help them finalize details to make each house a unique home.”
Continual Education Teaches Quality
Such partnership is no accident. HUF HAUS operates an extensive apprentice program to train junior employees in business management, trades, drafting, carpentry and joinery. The company also provides postgraduate professional education, and offers its staff weekly language courses in English and French.
HUF HAUS employees work in specialized teams with vast experience in the work they perform – carpentry, plumbing, masonry and other critical functions. The teamwork is essential, particularly at a construction site during a home’s assembly. Teams must move like clockwork to meet the challenging deadlines HUF HAUS imposes on itself.
“It is critical to work efficiently when we assemble a home,” said Kolbe. “The on-site assembly is the only time component parts risk exposure to the elements and we must work quickly to minimize exposure. That is why we weatherproof a typical home in six days or less.”
The HUF HAUS approach to home construction has created a unique culture at the company. Thirty of the company’s 450 employees have been with the company for more than 30 years. The employee with the longest tenure has been with HUF HAUS for 45 years!
Such longevity is reflected in the homes HUF HAUS has built around the world: Monuments to their owners. Havens for their families.
