Jaguar has a rich history of offering customers highly-collectible, highly-personalized limited edition models. Perhaps the very first example of a true limited edition Jaguar was the 1938 SS100 Coupe. The brand built just one.
Many of the legendary Jaguars in the company’s storied past were in fact limited editions. Those first aluminum-bodied XK120 sports cars from the late 1940s? Just 244 were built. The gorgeous C-type racing roadster? A mere 53. The fabulous XKSS made famous by its well-known owner, Steve McQueen? A paltry 16.
It was only fitting that for its 75th anniversary year, Jaguar would create a very special version of its latest 510-horsepower supercharged XKR – the 2011 XKR175 75th Anniversary Coupe. As the name suggests, just 175 of these highly-collectible grand tourers will be offered in the US at a price, including destination, of $105,500.
This rocketship coupe isn’t the only special edition Jaguar to be offered to collectors of unique, high-performance luxury automobiles. The 2011 XJ Supersport is the flagship of the new XJ line-up and is only being made available by special order at a starting price of $111,075, including destination.
Apart from its truly bespoke interior, what makes this XJ Supersport unique in the XJ line-up is that it is the only model to be offered with the sensationally powerful 510-horsepower version of Jaguar’s new 5.0-liter AJ-V8 engine.
See it in the metal and the XKR175 is just a stunning automobile. Like Henry Ford’s Model T, you can get it in any color you like as long as it’s black. But in this case, the black is a shimmering, high-gloss Ultimate Black paint.
Visual changes to the standard XKR include unique 20-inch Kasuga 10-spoke alloys, eye-popping bright red brake calipers and aerodynamic enhancements that include new front and rear spoilers, distinctive new lower body extensions and a rear diffuser. Those aero features are there for a purpose. Recalibrating the XKR’s engine management system takes the XKR175’s top speed up from the standard car’s 155 mph to 174 mph.
Open the door, slide behind that leather-rimmed wheel and take-in this gorgeous, understated-yet-elegant cabin. All around you is Warm Charcoal leather with contrasting Cranberry stitching and glossy Piano Black veneer. To confirm the car’s limited edition status, the door sill tread plates read: “XKR175 – 1 of 175.”
This is a fabulous driving car. Just a squeeze of the throttle delivers one powerful shove in the back as the big supercharged 5.0-liter unleashes its 510 horsepower and 461 pound-feet of torque. While the Jaguar can lunge from standstill to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds, it’s the V8’s mid-range thrust for lightening-fast passing that is even more impressive.
Despite its size, there’s a lightness and agility here that you feel as the car scythes through tight corners and fast sweepers. Its steering is laser-precise and perfectly-weighted, while the grip from its tires is immense.
The bespoke elegance of the new XJ Supersport is truly the ultimate expression of Jaguar luxury and power. It's the only XJ to offer a dizzying array of custom, bespoke finishes.
The instant you step inside, you know you are being cosseted in something very special. There is gorgeous, best-of-the-best, semi-aniline leather on the seats and soft grain leather on the dash, doors and even the head lining.
On the instrument cowl and door tops, the car can be specified with ‘tipped’ leather that has the same kind of heavy-grained texture you see on high-end designer luggage.
Now fire-up the audio system and prepare to have your aural senses explode, courtesy of the Supersport’s custom Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system.
Of course you expect a flagship to be exciting to drive, but nothing prepares you for the searing performance and truly dynamic handling of Jaguar’s new flagship XJ.
Against the stopwatch, it’s capable of spearing from rest to 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds and charging to an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph. But somehow, the figures don’t come anywhere close to conveying the sheer electricity of the car’s performance.
See the gap in the traffic ahead, pull back once, twice, on those steering wheel-mounted paddles, and the Supersport flies. The surge of power, especially mid-range from, around 50 mph to 70 mph, is absolutely breathtaking.
And if you really want to enjoy any highway curves, select the Dynamic setting on the center console and revel in the firmer shocks, even more precise steering input, and more responsive six-speed transmission.
