Spring is in the air and there is no better time than now to enjoy seasonal fruits and vegetables. The flavors are irresistible, brighter and fresher, too. Asparagus, carrots, and strawberries are only some of the offerings Mother Nature has up her sleeve. Next time you’re thinking about firing up that grill or cooking with flair, check out some of my latest favorite cookbooks for dining in season.
Cooking In The Moment: A Year of Seasonal Recipes by Andrea Reusing (Clarkson Potter, 2011) Andrea Reusing’s beautiful offering of over 130 seasonal recipes is sure to inspire any home cook to consider seasonality the next time they take a stroll through the produce section of the grocery store. The accomplished North Carolina chef encourages readers to approach seasonal ingredients with enthusiasm by incorporating them into classic favorites like chicken & dumplings and strawberry ice cream. Cooking in the Moment is educational and approachable, and Reusing’s upbeat and refreshingly candid narration throughout ensures that readers will keep coming back to these recipes for seasons to come.
Cooking for One: A Seasonal Guide to the Pleasure of Preparing Delicious Meals for Yourself by Mark and Lisa Erickson (Lebhar-Friedman 2011) These two chefs, trained at the Culinary Institute of America, provide easy-to-follow instructions for creating delicious, personal-sized meals from the freshest ingredients each season has in store. The book is separated into four chapters, beginning with spring and cycling all the way through. The first page of each season is called the Pantry. Here, the Ericksons explain thoroughly which items are in season and what you will need to think about purchasing. Cooking For One includes beautiful full-page photos and step-by-step directions to lift you out of your hum-drum rut of scrambled eggs and grilled cheese sandwiches. The Ericksons prove that cooking for one (or even two) can be affordable and full of seasonal ingredients that won’t break your bank or your waistline.
Fresh from the Market: Seasonal Cooking with Laurent Tourondel and Charlotte March by Laurent Tourondel and Charlotte March (John Wiley and Sons, 2010). The stand-out section of Fresh From the Market is certainly its seasonal cocktails pages. Everyone loves to try a new drink and what better way to dive into mixology than with a healthy seasonal spin (watermelon martinis anyone?). The rest of the recipes are equally delicious and you will enjoy the 160+ dishes included in this book. Keep this book handy for the next time you’re planning a memorable cocktail hour or formal dinner.
