Madison Freeman, Editor-In-Chief of Affluent Magazine recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Jamie Telchin to discuss his passions, capabilities and accomplishments.
Here is what our first “Leader in Luxury” had to say.
Affluent: As succinctly as possible, please tell us where you now are in your real estate development career.
Telchin: I’ve worked hard, from the ground up, to learn the business since I entered the field in 1999. I began my tenure with LXR in 2005 as vice president of development, which transitioned into the opportunity for me to develop luxury real estate. So I went from office development, which I did before I joined LXR, to luxury resort and luxury residential real estate development. This included entitlements and pre-construction for the One Thousand Ocean ultra-luxury condominium, the Boca Raton Resort’s Beach Club total refurbishment (representing approximately $300 million), as well as multiple other projects. Then, in 2008 – during the course of construction for One Thousand Ocean – I was promoted to president of development for all the luxury real estate within the LXR portfolio.
Affluent: Once you were at the helm, did you make any significant changes, say, at One Thousand Ocean?
Telchin: Yes. Because I was not completely satisfied with the sales and marketing for the project, we decided to bring sales inhouse. I also amassed a new team of advertising, public relations and marketing specialists. Together we’ve instituted some groundbreaking programs, such as being able to precisely track and enhance our broker and prospect outreach. We’ve also given One Thousand Ocean a bit of “star power” by commissioning Venus William’s V*Starr Interiors to design a furnished model residence. The building has been featured twice on HGTV’s hit reality series “Selling New York.” Additionally, several scenes from the action thriller “Parker” starring Jennifer Lopez and Jason Statham, due out this fall, were shot on location at the building. This attention has been invaluable for our marketing efforts.
Affluent: How involved are you in the sales and marketing of this trophy building?
Telchin: Extremely involved. My sales and marketing teams are outstanding, knowledgeable professionals. Most One Thousand Ocean purchasers ultimately want to talk directly with me [the developer], so I’m available whenever needed to help in closing deals.
Affluent: What’s after One Thousand Ocean?
Telchin: The answer is not “after,” but “simultaneously.” While approximately 20% of One Thousand Ocean remains to be sold (approximately $80 million) and purchase opportunities begin winding down, I am gearing up to potentially develop the next generation of luxury real estate properties for LXR. I really look forward to this next phase because we have other trophy residential sites, primarily in Florida and Puerto Rico, with some that are ripe for development.
Affluent: That sounds like a very big challenge – especially for someone as young as you are! Why do you think you are qualified to lead the charge?
Telchin: Over the course of my career, I’ve become well versed in finance, construction, sales and marketing. I have a keen understanding of how each component works and what it takes to keep all phases moving toward the ultimate goal. Having a great team around helps me provide the leadership required to move projects forward.
Affluent: Jamie, before this interview ends, can you share something about your personal life?
Telchin: I’m a 13-year resident of Boca Raton. Because I believe in giving back to the community where I work and live, I serve on the boards of the Jewish Community Center and the American Cancer Society-South Palm Beach Unit, and am an involved member of the Urban Land Institute.
Affluent: Any final words?
Telchin: I was raised in Upstate New York and earned an MBA, with an emphasis on entrepreneurship and venture management, from the University of Colorado. That base, complemented by great hands-on experience across many real estate developments, has shaped me into the professional I am today. In addition, I’m blessed with a wonderful wife and three children. They are my biggest and best accomplishments by far.
